What Are The Body Structures
Sep 17, 2023
The body structure can be classified into the following categories: hatchback, hatchback, station wagon, sports car, hardtop convertible, soft top convertible, MPV, and SUV.
Hatchback
In foreign countries, a hatchback is usually called "Hatchback", which means a hatchback, but it is different from what we call a hatchback in China. In China, a hatchback refers to a sedan without a prominent "butt" (trunk), which forms the same body as the trunk, and the engine is arranged independently. This layout form can increase the interior space of the car, so it is often used in small and compact cars.
Three box car
A three box car is the standard form of a sedan, and its body structure is composed of three mutually enclosed "compartments" with different purposes: the front engine compartment, the passenger compartment in the middle of the body, and the luggage compartment at the rear. In foreign countries, three box cars are usually called Sedan or Saloon.
hatchback
The hatchbacks referred to in China are those that have a similar appearance to a hatchback and also have prominent trunk, but the entire trunk cover and rear window glass are integrated and can be opened together. In foreign countries, they are commonly referred to as Quickback or Fastback. The relatively short trunk and relatively dynamic rear lines make hatchbacks visually superior to hatchbacks.
Station wagon
Most station wagons are based on sedans, with the trunk raised flush with the roof to increase luggage space. The advantage of a station wagon is that it has both the comfort of a sedan and a considerable amount of luggage space.
Sports car
Sports cars are generally designed with two doors, a lower body, smooth design, and a strong sense of sportiness. The seats are designed with two or 2+2 seats, which are more distinct from other models. The engine of sports cars can be in three forms: front, center, and rear; And there are also three types of roof forms: hard top, hard top convertible, and soft top convertible.
Phantom Drophead Coupe
Soft top convertible cars are usually designed with two doors, two seats, or two doors, four seats. The roof material is usually canvas, with ethylene or plastic as the roof material and foldable brackets. There are two types of roof retraction and retraction: manual and electric.
Hardtop convertible
A hardtop convertible refers to a car with a metal roof that automatically folds and is placed in the trunk. When the roof is closed, the design is not significantly different from that of a regular sports car.
SUV
SUV is the abbreviation of Sport Utility Vehicle, which means sport utility vehicle in Chinese. It is a type of vehicle that combines the comfort and space of a station wagon with a certain off-road capability. Nowadays, SUVs generally refer to those models produced on a sedan platform that have both the comfort of a sedan and the passability of an off-road vehicle to a certain extent.
MPV
MPV refers to Multi Purpose Vehicles. From the source, MPV has gradually evolved from a station wagon. It combines the spacious passenger space of a station wagon, the comfort of a sedan, and the functions of a van, and is generally a two box structure.
There is a clear difference between MPVs and vans. A van is a single box structure, where the passenger space and engine are located in a frame structure, with the engine placed below the driver's seat. Adopting this layout, the vehicle structure is simple, but the overall height of the vehicle is relatively increased. At the same time, the interior space of the vehicle increases, and the engine noise is relatively high. Moreover, due to the front seats being at the forefront of the vehicle, the buffer space in front of the driver and front passengers is very small in the event of a frontal impact accident, so the safety factor is low.
The current MPV first needs to have a two box structure, with a layout based on the structure of a sedan. Generally, it directly uses the chassis and engine of a sedan, thus having a similar appearance and the same driving and riding comfort as a sedan. Due to the front of the vehicle being the engine compartment, it can effectively cushion impacts from the front and protect the safety of front passengers. Many MPVs are produced on sedan platforms.
